Restorative dentistry focuses on repairing or replacing damaged teeth, restoring their health, function, and appearance. It addresses issues like decay, trauma, or wear, aiming to bring teeth back to their natural state or improve upon it. Common restorative procedures include fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, and dentures.
What qualifies for a dental emergency? What is considered a dental emergency?Severe toothache.Badly cracked tooth.Knocked-out tooth.Extruded (partially dislodged) tooth.Dental abscess (swelling of your face and jaw).Lost or broken dental restoration.Severe soft tissue injury (like a busted lip or deep cut).
Tooth extraction is a dental procedure that involves removing a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. It is a surgical procedure that may be necessary for various reasons, including: Impacted teeth: Teeth that are unable to erupt properly due to lack of space or other obstacles. Dental decay: Severe decay that has damaged the tooth beyond repair. Gum disease: Infection of the gums that has weakened the tooth's support.
Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth to prevent cavities. They act as a barrier, protecting the teeth from bacteria and food particles that can cause decay. Sealants are a quick, painless, and cost-effective way to protect teeth, particularly in children and teenagers, though adults can also benefit.
Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, known as the periodontium
A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage in the tooth's pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels. It involves removing the infected or damaged pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and then filling it with a bio-compatible material. A crown is often placed on the tooth to restore its strength and function.
Partial dentures are removable dental appliances that replace one or more missing teeth in either the upper or lower jaw. They are designed to fill the gaps left by missing teeth, restoring both the appearance and functionality of your smile. Partial dentures typically consist of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored acrylic base, which may include a metal or plastic framework for support and retention.
A dental cleaning is a professional procedure that involves removing plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums. It is an essential part of maintaining oral health and preventing gum disease and cavities.
Cosmetic dentistry refers to a branch of dentistry that focuses on improving the appearance of teeth and smile. It encompasses a range of procedures aimed at enhancing the aesthetics of the oral cavity, without necessarily addressing underlying dental health issues. Cosmetic dentistry procedures may include:Teeth whitening, Dental veneers, Orthodontics (braces), Dental implants, Bonding, and Crown placement.
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that lightens the color of teeth, making them appear brighter and whiter. It works by using bleaching agents, typically hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, to break down stain molecules on the tooth surface. While it can't make teeth perfectly white, it can lighten the existing color by several shades.
Dental bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure that uses a tooth-colored resin to repair or enhance the appearance of teeth. It's a versatile technique that can fix chipped, cracked, discolored, or misshapen teeth, close gaps, and even protect exposed tooth roots. The process involves applying, shaping, and hardening the resin with a special light, resulting in a natural-looking restoration.
A dental crown, also known as a tooth cap, is a restorative covering that encases a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are custom-made to fit precisely and can be crafted from various materials like porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or gold. They are used to protect weakened or cracked teeth, improve the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth, or anchor dental bridges.
Dentists apply fluoride to teeth to strengthen them and prevent tooth decay. This can be done in the form of a varnish, gel, or foam, often during routine dental check-ups. Fluoride helps protect teeth by strengthening enamel and inhibiting the growth of bacteria that cause cavities.
